DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS

1.1   PHILOSOPHY

The Bachelor of Science (B. Sc.) programme in Physics is designed to provide students   with sound and broad theoretical and practical knowledge of Physics to meet the technological needs of the nation.

1.2   OBJECTIVES:

(i) To instill in students a sense of enthusiasm for Physics, and appreciation of its   applications in different contexts.

(ii) To develop in students the ability to apply scientific and technical knowledge and skills acquired through the study of Physics to the solution of theoretical and practical problems.

(iii) To produce graduates who will be interested in higher level research, provide manpower in the teaching profession, research institutes, and industries and of course as a basis for the technological needs of Taraba State and the country at large.

(iv) To involve students in intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning.

 

 

2.0   DEGREE OFFERED

The Department offers an undergraduate programme leading to the award of Bachelor of Science, B. Sc (Hons.) Physics.

 

3.0   DURATION OF THE PROGRAMME

The normal duration for the degree programme is a minimum of four years for those who entered through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) into 100 level and three years for those who enter through direct entry (D.E) into 200 level.

 

4.0   ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION INTO THE PROGRAMME

 

4.1 UNIFIED TERTIARY MATRICULATION (UTME) REQUIREMENTS:     Candidates are expected to sit for the UTME in the following subjects: English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.

 

4.2   ORDINARY LEVEL (‘O’ LEVEL) REQUIREMENTS

Candidate should have at least five credits passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Agricultural Science in not more than two sittings from a recognized examination body e.g. WAEC, NECO, NABTEB etc.

 

4.3   DIRECT ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the O’ level requirements outlined in 4.2 (above), candidates should either have:

(a) Two ‘A’ Level passes in Physics and Mathematics from a recognized   examination body e.g. IJMB; or

(b)  At least a lower credit in Diploma or NCE.

 

5.0   SPECIFICATIONS OF CREDIT UNITS BY LEVEL 

Candidates are expected to register a minimum of 165 credits units for those commencing at 100 level and 119 credit units for those admitted into 200 level as per the following specification:

6.0   CLASSIFICATION OF DEGREE TO BE AWARDED

The following classifications based on Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)   apply to all degrees awarded by the University.

7.0   GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS AND AWARD A DEGREE

To be eligible to graduate and be awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics, a candidate should have been duly matriculated and satisfied the following:

 

(1) Passed all the registered courses in the degree programme of study.

(2) Passed all the prescribed general studies courses.

(3) Earned the required minimum number of course credit units as determined by the     Department/faculty/Senate for the award of degree.

(4) Fulfill the general requirements of credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Agricultural Science.

(5) Earned a satisfactory grade in Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES).

(6) Not been found wanting in character in the course of learning in the Department and the University as a whole.
